Stuff that might bug you... You might have an upset tummy or feel a little tired afterwards. Make sure that you tell your nurse if you do.

Blood Draw

Taking blood so doctors can find out what's making you sick.

A silver butterfly with a plastic tube attached.

FEELS LIKE

A small poke or pinch.

SMELLS LIKE

The rubbing alcohol they use to clean your skin smells like nail polish remover.

DID YOU KNOW

The doctors can tell lots of different things from looking at your blood to find out what is going on in your body.

Stuff that might bug you... You might feel a little tired afterwards. Taking off
the bandage feels like taking tape off your arm.

Blood Pressure Cuff

LOOKS LIKE

A wide armband with a tube attached.

SOUNDS LIKE

"Whoosh, whoosh whoosh" as it is being pumped up and then "sssssssssssssss" as the air lets out when it is done.

FEELS LIKE

A big hug!

DID YOU KNOW

Chemotherapy

A treatment for cancer

LOOKS LIKE

Most of the medicines are given in an IV. Some are pills or liquids and are taken by mouth. A few are given as ‘shots’.

SOUNDS LIKE

There will be a beep when the IV is finished.

FEELS LIKE

You can’t feel the medicines as they go in, but the medicines can make you feel sick to your stomach.

SMELLS LIKE

The medicines don’t usually smell.

DID YOU KNOW

CT/CAT Scan

A machine that makes pictures of your body

LOOKS LIKE

A big donut.

SOUNDS LIKE

A fast whirring sound like a hair dryer.

FEELS LIKE

Lying on a picnic table.

DID YOU KNOW

The machine uses X-Rays taken while spinning in a circle and the pictures are put together by a computer.

Stuff that might bug you... This machine moves very, very slooooowly.

Digital Thermometer

An instrument used to take your temperature.

LOOKS LIKE

A regular thermometer just fatter. An ear thermometer looks like
a TV remote control.

SOUNDS LIKE

A tiny beep when it is done.

FEELS LIKE

A lollypop stick. The ear thermometers are like sticking your
finger in your ear.

DID YOU KNOW

A digital thermometer can tell in an instant if you have a fever
or not!

Stuff that might bug you... You have to wait for the beep but digital thermometers are super fast!


Doctors

People who are highly trained to help you get better.

LOOKS LIKE

They come in all shapes and sizes.

SOUNDS LIKE

Some are loud and funny!

FEELS LIKE

You should ‘feel’ a lot of trust with your doctor because they are there to help you feel better.

SMELLS LIKE

Let’s hope that your doctor smells good!

Stuff that might bug you... Doctors might use big words that you don't understand. It is your job to ask what things mean.

Face Mask

What doctors and nurses sometimes wear over their mouth and nose.

A face mask makes someone’s voice sound softer.

FEELS LIKE

A paper towel covering your nose.

Gurney

Squeaky, if the wheels need to be oiled.

Your bed at home, very comfortable and smooth!

SMELLS LIKE

Clean, like fresh laundry.

Stuff that might bug you... It might be kind of boring just staring at the ceiling.

Hospital Bed

A bed designed to be super comfortable just for you!

An electric car window going up and down.

FEELS LIKE

Your bed at home.

SMELLS LIKE

Clean laundry.

DID YOU KNOW

This bed can move up and down to help you sit up to eat or watch T.V. You can test them out to see what is comfortable.

Stuff that might bug you... It might be a little higher than your bed at home
but you can lower it if you want.


IV - Infusion

A way to give you medicine and liquids through a tube.

LOOKS LIKE

A small plastic tube taped to your skin.

SOUNDS LIKE

The IV machine makes a beep when it's finished.

FEELS LIKE

There is a quick pinch when the needle goes in but then it doesn’t hurt. The tape feels like having a sticker on the back of your hand.

SMELLS LIKE

The tape used to hold the IV in place smells like plastic. The rubbing alcohol that the nurse uses to clean your skin smells like nail polish remover.

DID YOU KNOW

An IV can give you lots of medicines and fluid so you don’t have to drink them or get as many shots!

Stuff that might bug you... Having an IV means you may have to walk
around with your IV pole.


MRI

A machine that can take X-ray pictures of your body

LOOKS LIKE

A big tunnel – you fit in the hole!

SOUNDS LIKE

You can hear a banging inside the machine like lots of little hammers. Some children say it sounds like a bunch of shoes in the dryer.

FEELS LIKE

Lying on a big metal table.

DID YOU KNOW

The machine has magnets inside it to take pictures of the inside of your body. It may take longer than your X-Ray.

Stuff that might bug you... This machine is really noisy and takes a long time
because it takes so many pictures. You can pretend you're on a rocket flying to the moon.


Nurses

A nurse's job is to make sure that you are okay.

LOOKS LIKE

Somebody there to help you.

SOUNDS LIKE

Nurses sound nice.

FEELS LIKE

Nurses are gentle.

SMELLS LIKE

Hopefully your nurse smells nice too!

DID YOU KNOW

If you need anything, like a snack, a pillow or an extra blanket
you can ask a nurse to get it for you.

Stuff that might bug you... Sometimes nurses need to do things you may not
like. Just remember they are doing it so that you will feel better and so that you can go home.


Oncology

Oncology means cancer

LOOKS LIKE

Most of the time cancer can’t be seen without special equipment like an MRI or X-Ray, but sometime it is visible as a lump.

SOUNDS LIKE

(On – CALL – oh – gee) There are no sounds with cancer.

FEELS LIKE

Cancer can make you feel tired or bad and may cause pain.

SMELLS LIKE

There usually isn’t any smell with cancer.

DID YOU KNOW

Cancers are rare in children but can occur in many places in the body.


Oncologist

This is a cancer doctor.

They come in all shapes and sizes.

Stuff that might bug you... There are hundreds of things that may bug you
about being sick. Just remember that you are at the hospital to get better and get home!

Radiation

High Energy rays

LOOKS LIKE

The machines that take regular X-ray pictures come in different shapes and sizes. Radiation machines to treat cancer are very big in size.

SOUNDS LIKE

X rays are quiet – just like radiation from the sun doesn’t make sound.

FEELS LIKE

You can’t feel X-rays.

SMELLS LIKE

Some people can smell ozone – this is what happens to air as radiation passes through it.

DID YOU KNOW

Radiation can work with surgery or chemotherapy or even by itself to make cancer go away.


Regimen

A regimen is a plan and means a treatment with several medicines

LOOKS LIKE

You can’t see a regimen – this just means a plan with all the medicines, radiation or surgery a patient needs to get better.

SOUNDS LIKE

It sounds like something in the Army! But it is really just something you do every day like brush your teeth or comb your hair.

FEELS LIKE

A regimen doesn’t feel like anything.

SMELLS LIKE

A regimen doesn’t have smells.

DID YOU KNOW

Lots of smart oncologists with special training get together to design the very best treatment regimens for you to have the best chance of being cured from cancer.


 

Side Effects

A reaction to a medicine or treatment

LOOKS LIKE

Some side effects can make a person look different– like losing your hair or make your skin peel like a sunburn.

SOUNDS LIKE

There are no sounds that happen with a side effect.

FEELS LIKE

Some side effects make you feel sick, tired or itchy. You might not feel hungry.

SMELLS LIKE

Side effects usually don’t have smells. (Unless you barf!)

DID YOU KNOW

Chemotherapy often causes side effects like hair loss – some side effects may last longer but most are temporary.


Stethoscope

It helps doctors and nurses listen to your heart beat and hear how you are breathing.

LOOKS LIKE

Nothing for you, but it makes every sound very loud for the
doctor. They hear your heart go bump bump, bump bump!

FEELS LIKE

Someone gently touching your chest with the back of a cold metal spoon. It doesn't hurt.

A stethoscope may smell like rubbing alcohol if the doctor or
nurse just cleaned it.

DID YOU KNOW

Your heart pumps over 4,000 gallons of blood through your
body every day!

Stuff that might bug you... You have to sit still and take slow, deep breaths
when someone is listening to your heart beat.

Wheelchair

A chair you can ride in

LOOKS LIKE

A robot chair.

SOUNDS LIKE

A rolling chair and might squeak a little bit.

FEELS LIKE

A chair you might sit in at school. Very comfy and fast!

SMELLS LIKE

Plastic and metal.

DID YOU KNOW

Some people race wheelchairs for twenty miles or more!

Stuff that might bug you... If your feet don't reach the footrests sometimes
they can be adjusted up or down.


X-Ray

X-Rays are a way to take a picture of your insides.

LOOKS LIKE

When it is done, an X-Ray may be a photo on
a piece of plastic or a picture on a computer screen.

SOUNDS LIKE

You might hear a buzzer when the machine is turned on and off.

FEELS LIKE

Having your picture taken while you are lying on a picnic table. You may have to wear a heavy apron to cover up the parts of
your body that are not being X-Rayed.

SMELLS LIKE

X-Rays do not have a smell.

DID YOU KNOW

That an X-Ray will show if you have metal fillings or braces.

Stuff that might bug you... Sometimes the X-Ray rooms are a little cold so you
might want to wear socks. Ask for a blanket if you are really cold.
